The Essex village of Orsett is in the Thurrock district of the county around 3 miles north east of Grays. Nearby Horndon-on-the-Hill staged races from 1839 to 1841, but Orsett held its first steeplechase meeting on Tuesday 27th April 1841. The course was in fields on the edge of Orsett well adapted for the purpose of steeplechasing. The main race was the Orsett Steeplechase which was won appropriately enough by Mr Sackett’s Orsett Lass. Races continued to be held annually for the next 4 years until a final meeting on Tuesday 23rd September 1845. The Ladies Whip was won by Scott for Mr Borthwick, while the Orsett Stakes went to Mr Barry’s Malvina. |
